How GenAI in Rail Revenue and Inventory Management Can Support Rail Operators like GBR in Driving Standardization & Innovation

One of UK’s leading railway magazine has recently published an interview with Rémi Habfast, Managing Director of PAXONE. They discussed about what AI can realistically achieve in passenger rail, the power of synergy between revenue and inventory management systems, and how the industry is currently at the crux of transformation.

A key theme throughout the interview is that operators get more from their commercial systems when they work together, with AI amplifying that synergy. PAXONE, Wiremind’s inventory and distribution system, provides the foundation, while CAYZN, as the revenue management system, builds on it to optimise revenue. Together, they enable AI-driven optimisation across the full value chain, driving commercial performance beyond what each system could deliver on its own.

The value of this joined-up approach becomes clear when we consider what makes up a rail offer: Pricing, scheduling and capacity are three parts of the same offer: a train that runs at the right time, at the right price and with the right number of seats. As Rémi puts it,

“Optimise each element separately, and you leave value on the table. Optimise each element together, and you end up with a solution that maximises optimisation across the full value chain.”

That thinking is also behind CAYZN and PAXONE: Revenue managers can steer ancillaries and post-booking offers directly from CAYZN into PAXONE, and the data flowing between the two helps shape the perfect pricing and inventory decisions on both sides.

“There is also value in the data flowing between the two systems that sharpens pricing and inventory decisions on both sides rather than each system working off its own view.”

AI makes that link even more powerful. Rémi describes teams steering PAXONE with a simple sentence instead of a stack of menus, like "open 50 more seats on the 8 am Paris-Lyon for the next two weeks", with CAYZN doing the rest.

Rémi also highlights how AI agents in CAYZN can support revenue managers across a range of tasks, from pricing recommendations to workflow management and reporting. Pulling one report across several operators can be hard, but with a single prompt, an AI agent can run the analysis automatically, giving teams a consistent view across operators.

On the passenger side, Rémi sees the longer-term goal as seamless travel across operators and countries, and AI could take offers from different operators and combine them into one personalized journey, which could help shift people from cars and planes back to rail. Getting there takes standardisation and operators opening up their APIs, which is why we are building one suite of Passenger Solutions for the whole industry, with customers from France to Finland.

As rail operators like Great British Railways bring operators onto shared platforms, this synergy opens a faster path to innovation. Rémi elaborates that,

“If several operators share the same platform, an innovation built for one operator's need can end up benefiting everyone using it, so the speed at which innovation reaches the whole ecosystem is much faster.”
